We had a much better night with no vomiting or diarrhea-yeah! Jacob had a couple episodes of the dry heaves during the day, but much better than yesterday. He was also able to keep down several sips of water today. We had a slow start to the morning with Jacob feeling pretty lethargic, but his energy level picked up a little throughout the day. He even got out of bed twice and played on the mat. He’s really unsteady with his wobbly little legs, but he was determined to climb up on top of the couch to look out the window. Jacob spent much of the afternoon filling one of those plastic pink basins with water from a sprinkling can and I spent much of the day fetching the water for the can and wiping up the water that spilled. It was a lot of fun and helped pass the time today. We also made some cheerful Easter decorations for the room.
Jacob’s blood cultures from Saturday were still negative today so they stopped the IV antibiotic they had started him on. Basically the docs are telling me this Rotavirus is pretty nasty and can stay around for a long time. We’ll just have to ride it out. The biggest issue right now is nutrition and how to get it. They restarted his NJ feeds at a really slow rate and we hope to increase them tomorrow little by little until he’s at a sufficient rate to get the calories he needs. It’s a balancing act. We’ll just have to wait to see if he can tolerate the NJ feeds, but if not, they’ll have to restart him on TPN. Not really what we want, but we’ll do what we have to. He’s doing fine with the NJ feeds at 10ml an hour, but the target rate is 45ml an hour.
Also, they changed the one oral medicine we were having so much trouble with in clogging his NJ tube to a different one that goes through much easier. We had a little scare before that with the tube getting clotted off again, but we finally got it working.
All in all, we had a very good day today. God continues to bless us and provide for us on this journey. We’re grateful for all your love, support and prayers.
